On this visit we will explore Central Europe's largest lead and silver mine, which was founded in 1789. The mines were in full operation until 1978.
In 1830, the mines were more than 1600 meters deep and were therefore some of the deepest in Europe. The mines exhibit historical mining machinery and have an extensive mineral collection and exhibitions about the daily lives of miners.
The tour starts in the mine's registration room, where you will visit an exhibition about the refining of metals and minerals such as silver and lead.
We will then be given helmets when we go out and ride a mine train to the historic Anne mine, which has deep underground tunnels. The mine train route is 260m. We will hear about the great mining accident of 1893 with more than 100 fatalities, and we will go down a 50-meter-long roller coaster at the Drkolnov mine, which was used before steam power. In the mines, we will also see European mining innovations, such as the early use of steel wire in shafts and steam engines.
The underground journey and the preserved mining infrastructure create an immersive experience of the mining heritage that shaped the region and contributed significantly to Austria-Hungary's silver and lead production.
The next part of the tour starts on the lowest floor of the Anna mine, where you will descend into the depths by elevator to see the Wasserlauf - the water run. The 750m long underground corridor connects the Anna Mine with the Vojtech Mine.
The last part of the tour goes to the huge steam engine from 1914, which was used as the engine for the elevator when it had to rise from a depth of 1600 meters.
The tour is physically demanding, as there are 156 steps up to the surface
