Discover the fascinating Podolí Waterworks, a historic and architecturally significant water supply facility located on the right bank of the Vltava River in Prague's Podolí district. This neoclassical complex, designed by architect Antonín Engel in the 1920s, stands as a striking landmark and a testament to Prague's commitment to clean drinking water.

During the 1,5 hour long tour in the museum part, explore the impressive interior of the Podolí Water Station, where elegant arches transform a utilitarian building into a beautiful architectural gem. Learn about the history of Prague's water supply, from the original filtration and chlorination processes to modern chemical water treatment and filtration technologies added throughout the 20th century.

The museum interior is separated from the operational areas of the waterworks by a glass wall, offering visitors a stunning view into the filtration hall, known for its grandeur as “Engel’s Cathedral.” The exhibition maintains a chronological structure, illustrating the historical development of Prague’s water supply – from the first private water systems in the 12th century, through Renaissance-era Vltava water towers and 19th-century waterworks efforts, up to the present-day water supply of the capital city.

Exhibited items include the original pumping machine from the Klatovy waterworks (1830), water pipes from the Roman era, a section of the Prague Castle water system from the time of Rudolf II, and many other artifacts. The three-dimensional objects are complemented by reproductions of rare archival materials that have never been displayed before, as well as a wealth of historical photographs. Particularly valuable are collections of different types of water pipes, valves, and various historical instruments and tools. A separate section is dedicated to a unique collection of water meters.

Gain insight into the waterworks' role today as a backup water source supplying key areas like Josefov and the Old Town, with a capacity that can be increased from 500 to 2200 liters per second in emergencies. Ascend the 50-meter water tower balcony for panoramic views of Prague Castle, Vyšehrad, Smíchov, and Petřín, offering a unique perspective of the city and the Vltava River.

Podolí Waterworks is a vital part of Prague’s water heritage and a unique cultural attraction. It offers an experience that blends history, architecture, and technology, and is especially suitable for groups from technical schools.
